How it works

A measurement system that turns site data into verifiable numbers

Product carbon footprinting, carbon removal projects, and Catena-X data exchange all run on the same measurement system. Inputs differ from site to site, but the method does not: every number carries its source, assumptions, and applicable standard.

Verification, certification, and credit issuance are performed by independent bodies. greenMRV prepares the measurements, calculations, and evidence those bodies need to make their decisions.

Illustrative screen. August electricity use for an LCA and EPD project, the combustion chamber temperature and H/Corg of a carbon removal facility, and the PCF and primary data share of a Catena-X part accumulate in a single evidence trail, each with its source. Every number keeps its source, assumptions, standard, and approval. All figures are illustrative and have not yet been verified.

Contour lines and survey-point coordinates are illustrative

Why measurement

Measurement is the bottleneck in carbon markets

Companies buying carbon removal credits and customers receiving component footprints both want to know what the numbers are based on. The three facts below explain why we look at measurement before calculation.

How five inputs become three outputs

Source data from your site passes through the measurement, calculation and evidence engine, , and the evidence trail (audit trail) to become an output. Recognition of that output rests with independent bodies.

Components

What each element does, the standards it follows, and the records it keeps

The measurement, calculation and evidence engine calculates the numbers, digital MRV collects the readings, and the evidence trail keeps the source of every value. We design these records to one target: a verifier should be able to recalculate the same result from them.

Digital MRV (dMRV) processing steps

Conventional MRV and digital MRV

Measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) is the full process of proving that each tonne of carbon claimed has actually been removed. Digital MRV gathers measurement data, contracts, and chain-of-custody information, checks their quality, calculates net removals, and passes the results to the verifier.[10]

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Questions we often hear in technical reviews, with the sources we checked for each answer

Q1Can numbers produced by AI be trusted?

The AI’s role is to ask questions and organize documents. Emission factors come from databases whose sources have been confirmed, and the system is designed so that every number keeps its source document and assumptions. Before anything becomes an official document, it needs approval from the person in charge and, depending on the purpose, third-party verification or a certification audit.

See our operating principles

Q2Which databases do you use?

Every report states the name and version of each database used. The Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI) advises that the national LCI database and its impact assessment factors may not be used for commercial purposes, and greenMRV uses them only within these terms.

Source: [8] · checked October 11, 2026

Q3Do we have to install sensors?

It depends on the service. LCA and EPD work can start from BOMs and utility bills. Some carbon removal methodologies require continuous measurement, such as recording combustion chamber temperature at intervals of one minute or less (see Measurement requirements).

In Catena-X, utility bills and purchase records are recognized as primary data, not just meter readings (§6.1). Data counts toward the primary data share (PDS) only when both the activity data and the emission factor are primary (§7.2.4), so installing meters alone does not raise the PDS. Metering serves to make allocation by product and the annual review more accurate.

Sources: [18][4] · checked October 11, 2026

Q4Where is the data stored?

Once we have decided where service data will be stored, we will publish the region in the processing location table on this page and in our Privacy Policy.

We are connecting the website’s consultation and contact forms to HubSpot, our CRM. HubSpot stores data in the US, Canada, Australia, or the EU (Germany) and has no Korean region, so once the storage country is decided, we will disclose it as a cross-border transfer.

Source: [21] · checked October 11, 2026

Q5How do you work with verification bodies?

We give verifiers the evidence package and read-only views, and prepare material to answer their queries. The verification body makes its decision independently. greenMRV is not a verification or certification body.

See roles by service

Q6Can carbon credits lower a product carbon footprint?

No. The Catena-X PCF Rulebook requires offsets to be left out of the PCF and reported separately (§7.2.6). Likewise, carbon removal credits that greenMRV helps originate are not deducted from product carbon footprints; they are reported separately.
