LCA & EPD Automation SaaS

Prepare an evidence-backed Korean EPD, even without an LCA expert

Upload your bill of materials (BOM) together with your electricity and gas bills. The AI asks you in Korean for anything else it needs, and the calculation engine computes the results in line with the applicable standard. From life cycle assessment (LCA) results to draft application documents for Korea’s EPD program (operated by KEITI), every number traces back to its source.

Beta terms and timing are shared after you apply. Certification and registration go through verification and review by independent bodies; greenMRV works with you on the calculations and documents up to that point.

Illustrative screen: after a BOM and bills are uploaded, the AI asks how to allocate electricity use and shows a preliminary carbon footprint that has not yet been verified.

Contour lines and survey station coordinates are illustrative

Why now

Why requests for product-level carbon figures keep growing

Export customers, EU regulations, and Korea’s disclosure timeline are all asking the same question: how much carbon is emitted in making this product? The answer has to be a number with a source behind it.

Dates subject to change

Examples, 2024–2026

Customer requests

Large companies and export customers are asking their suppliers for product-level carbon data.[2] One 2026 regional support program asks applicants for proof that an EU buyer or an exporting customer has requested carbon data.[3] In March 2024, LG Chem launched an LCA support program for its suppliers with the Ministry of Environment (now the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment) and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI).[4]

Definitive period since Jan 1, 2026

EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)

CBAM entered its definitive period on January 1, 2026.[5] If you export iron and steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizers, electricity, or hydrogen to the EU, your EU importer may request installation-level embedded emissions data. Using actual emissions requires accredited verification; otherwise, default values apply, with a mark-up that rises in stages.[6] Sales of CBAM certificates for 2026 imports start on February 1, 2027, and the first annual declaration is due by September 30, 2027.[7][6] EU trilogue negotiations on a proposal to extend the scope to downstream products such as screws and bolts are scheduled for October 20 and November 30, 2026.[8]

CBAM follows different rules from product LCA. See CBAM data preparation support

CPR applies from Jan 8, 2026

EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)

The EU Construction Products Regulation has applied since January 8, 2026. Environmental declarations are being phased in, starting with the climate change indicator, and become mandatory as the technical specifications for each product family are set.[9][10] Under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, the life cycle global warming potential (GWP) of new buildings over 1,000 m² must be calculated and disclosed in EU member states from January 1, 2028.[11] Both frameworks use product data based on EN 15804.[12]

The timing for each product family depends on when its harmonized technical specification takes effect.

Sustainability disclosure in Korea (KSSB standards)

KOSPI-listed companies with consolidated total assets of KRW 10 trillion or more must make sustainability disclosures under the Korea Sustainability Standards Board (KSSB) standards from fiscal year 2027. Scope 3 disclosure has been deferred by three years to start in 2031 (tentative), and third-party assurance becomes mandatory from 2030.[13][14] As listed customers calculate their Scope 3 emissions, they may ask suppliers for product data.

Other drivers

  • Public procurementLow-Carbon Products count as green products (Korea Eco-Label, Low-Carbon, and Good Recycled products), which public institutions are required to purchase.[15] As of the end of September 2025, 1,291 products from 334 companies held Low-Carbon Product certification.[16]
  • Greenwashing rulesThe EU’s ECGT Directive (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition) has applied since September 27, 2026. It bans unsubstantiated generic environmental claims to consumers and “carbon neutral” claims that rely on offsetting.[17] Korea has its own “Guidelines on labeling and advertising eco-friendly business activities” (October 31, 2023).[18]
  • BatteriesAs of September 26, 2026, carbon footprint declarations under Article 7 of the EU Battery Regulation have not yet started, because the delegated act on the calculation method has not been adopted. Customer requests are arriving ahead of the regulation.[19]

But in practice

  1. No one on the team has done an LCA before. You wait months to fit into a consultant’s schedule. One 2026 regional support program runs site visits in June, calculations from July to October, and final reports in November. Places are also limited to a fixed number of companies, such as 9 or 20.[3][2]
  2. The data is scattered. The BOM sits in the ERP system, electricity use on the bills, and production volumes in Excel. You also need a rule for splitting plant-wide consumption across products (allocation).
  3. Some processes have no Korea-specific data. Without data, you fall back on conservative default values, which can make a product look worse than it really is.[20]
  4. The same work gets done again and again. Korean EPDs, overseas EPDs, and customer templates all differ, and Korean EPD certification must be renewed every three years.[21]

Preparation · 00–03

00

Start by choosing what to produce

Choose one or more goals: a Korean EPD (including Low-Carbon Product certification), an ISO 14067 product carbon footprint for customers, a draft EN 15804+A2 EPD for EU customers, or CBAM data preparation. The data you need and the calculation rules depend on the goal.

What you get at this step
  • A list of the data each goal requires
  • An overview of the applicable standards and product-category guidelines
  • A preparation checklist
You decide

Screen description: an illustrative screen with four goal cards. Korean EPD and ISO 14067 are selected, and the CBAM card carries a note that separate rules apply.

01

Upload the files you already have

Drag and drop your BOM spreadsheet, KEPCO electricity bills, gas bills, and production records. greenMRV reads the items, weights, and materials; monthly consumption (kWh, m³); and production volumes. It converts them into activity data and records which page of the original each value came from.

What you get at this step
  • Automatic recognition of BOMs, bills, and production records
  • An activity data table linked to source pages
  • A screen for checking and correcting what was recognized
Automated + you confirm

Screen description: an illustrative screen in which four files have been uploaded. Usage and the billing period are picked up from the electricity bill and moved into rows of the activity data table, with the customer number and address masked.

02

Answer questions instead of learning jargon

The AI turns the choices every LCA has to make—the , the , and —into questions in Korean. As you answer, the methodology card immediately records how each answer is applied as a rule. The AI only suggests options; the decision rests with your team.

What you get at this step
  • A declared unit and system boundary that follow the guidelines
  • Allocation rules for processes shared by several products
  • A methodology card that keeps the rationale for every answer
AI suggests · you decide

Screen description: an illustrative screen in which the AI asks first about the declared unit and then about how to allocate electricity, and the answer chosen by your team is recorded on the methodology card with the decision-maker and date.

03

List the gaps instead of hiding them

Missing data goes on a list. When the AI proposes proxy data, it shows the data quality rating alongside. Nothing enters the calculation until your team approves it, and if you need data from a supplier, you can send a request on the spot.

What you get at this step
  • A gap list sorted into red, amber, and green
  • Proxy data suggestions with quality ratings
  • Supplier data requests
AI suggests · you approve

Screen description: an illustrative screen showing 87% data completeness, with items that need review, items that need input, and approved items listed below with their status.

Calculation · 04–05

04

Calculate to the standards you chose

The engine calculates seven impact categories for a Korean EPD, the corresponding indicator set for EN 15804+A2, and greenhouse gases for ISO 14067. Each result shows the name and version of the database used and the dataset ID.

What you get at this step
  • Impact category results for each standard
  • Database name, version, and dataset ID
  • A calculation log that reproduces the same results on every rerun
Automated · calculation log saved

Screen description: an illustrative screen showing results for the seven Korean EPD impact categories, including a preliminary carbon footprint of 4.12 kgCO₂e/unit, below labels for the background database, electricity emission factor, and guidelines.

05

First, see where the carbon comes from

greenMRV shows where emissions concentrate by material, process, and energy. Adjust scenarios such as the share of renewable electricity or the use of recycled aluminum, and the gap to the Low-Carbon Product threshold moves with them.

What you get at this step
  • Contributions by material, process, and energy
  • Comparison of reduction scenarios
  • Preliminary position against the Low-Carbon Product criteria
You explore

Screen description: an illustrative screen with a contribution map split into aluminum extrusion 46%, electricity 27%, natural gas 9%, and other 18%, plus scenario bars with adjusted shares of renewable electricity and recycled aluminum, shown against the threshold. Scenario values are not certified values.

Submission · 06–08

06

Draft the documents you will submit

greenMRV drafts an LCA report structured to ISO 14044 and the Korean EPD certification application (the declaration, LCA results, and supporting evidence), plus an English EN 15804+A2 EPD draft if you need one. Click any number in a document to go to its calculation basis and source document.[23]

What you get at this step
  • Draft LCA report (Korean and English)
  • Draft Korean EPD application documents
  • Links from every number to its evidence
You review and approve

Screen description: an illustrative report preview marked “Draft — not yet third-party verified.” Pointing at the electricity use figure brings up the source document, the allocation basis, and the approval record.

07

Hand verifiers everything in one go

Calculation logs, source documents, assumptions, and approval history are bundled into an evidence package. The verifier follows the numbers in a read-only view and leaves questions; your team answers in the same view.

What you get at this step
  • Evidence package (calculation logs, documents, assumptions)
  • Read-only access for verifiers
  • Query and response history
Verifier decides

greenMRV is not a verification or certification body.

Screen description: an illustrative read-only verifier view with a list of evidence files next to the report. The verifier asks for the basis of the electricity allocation, and your team replies with the production records file attached.

08

Stay on schedule from application to renewal

You get checklists for applying for a Korean EPD through the EcoSquare portal and for registering with overseas programs. After certification, greenMRV sends advance reminders for renewal before the three-year validity period ends, for derivative product certification, and for support program deadlines.[21][24]

What you get at this step
  • Application checklists (EcoSquare, overseas programs)
  • Certification audit status tracker
  • Renewal and support program alerts
You apply directly

Screen description: an illustrative timeline running from application through fee assessment and payment, certification audit, committee review, certificate issuance, and surveillance to renewal, with the current certification audit stage highlighted and alerts for renewal and support program announcements.

Trust

Evidence in place before the verifier asks

Producing a number is one thing; getting it accepted is another. From the start, greenMRV keeps the records that acceptance requires.

Methodological conformity

Calculations follow international standards and the Korean EPD guidelines. Every report states which edition of which standard was applied.

  • ISO 14040/14044
  • ISO 14067:2018
  • ISO 14025
  • EN 15804+A2
  • Korean EPD guidelines

Database and version disclosure

Each result names the background database, its version, and the dataset ID. Calculation records are versioned, so the same inputs always produce the same results.

Terms of use for Korea’s national life cycle inventory (LCI) database

KEITI states that “the Korean LCI DB and impact assessment factors may not be used for commercial purposes.” greenMRV complies with these terms and discloses, for every result, which version of which database was used.

Third-party verification routes

greenMRV is not a verification or certification body. Who verifies or certifies depends on the deliverable; we prepare the materials each process requires.

Who verifies or certifies each deliverable

AI only asks and organizes—data and people stand behind the numbers

  1. A source for every number. Every value links back to a page in the original document or a dataset ID in the database.
  2. AI does not create factors. Emission factors come only from licensed databases or the client’s own documents.
  3. Estimates are flagged. Proxy data carries a quality rating and enters the calculation only after the person in charge approves it.
  4. People sign off. Methodology choices, proxy data, and final documents are approved by a person in charge, whose name is recorded.
  5. Calculations can be rerun. Each version is stored, so the same inputs produce the same results.

What we don’t do

We keep producing the numbers separate from verifying or certifying them.

  • Issuing certificates or guaranteeing certification outcomes
  • Acting as a verification body
  • Using Korea’s national LCI database in breach of its terms of use
  • Filing CBAM declarations or conducting CBAM verification for clients
  • Calculating product carbon footprints net of carbon credits (offsets are reported separately)
  • Supplying wording for unsubstantiated environmental claims

Offsets excluded [25] · Offset-based claims prohibited [17]

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Every answer cites its source and the date it was checked

Q1Can we get Korean EPD certification through this service?

The Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI) decides on certification after a certification audit and committee review, and issues the certificate. greenMRV is software that helps you prepare the calculations, the certification application, and materials for the audit; it does not guarantee certification outcomes.

Source [24] · checked October 11, 2026

Q2Can we do this without an in-house LCA expert?

Yes, you can get started. The AI turns choices such as the declared unit, system boundary, and allocation into questions, and records the rationale for each choice. For the results to become an official document, however, they need approval from the person in charge, a review by greenMRV experts where needed, and third-party verification or a certification audit.

Q3What data do we need?

The basics are your bill of materials (BOM), production volumes, and electricity and gas use (from your bills). Depending on your goal, you may also need transport, packaging, and waste data, as well as supplier data. Anything missing appears in a gap list, with suggested proxy data labeled with a quality rating.

Q4Is funding support available?

SMEs should look at KEITI’s EPD calculation support program. You apply for certification through a consulting firm and, once certified within the eligibility period, are reimbursed for the consulting costs: up to KRW 5 million per product for a first certification or KRW 2.5 million for a derivative-product or renewal certification, with a maximum of 2 products and KRW 10 million per company. The application period under the 2026 notice is September 15–October 14, 2026, and companies certified between October 2025 and September 2026 are eligible. If you supply a large company that has signed an agreement with KEITI, the large company–SME partnership track is another option (about 50% of consulting costs covered and a 30% reduction in the application fee). Whether fees for greenMRV or its expert support count as eligible costs must be confirmed in each program’s notice and with the implementing organization.

Q5A European customer requires an EN 15804 EPD. Can a Korean EPD replace it?

The indicator frameworks and program rules differ, so you may need to prepare one separately. In November 2024, KEITI signed a mutual recognition agreement (MRA) with Norway’s EPD-Global and, in the same month, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sweden’s International EPD. The product categories covered by mutual recognition are set in consultation with the partner program. greenMRV uses the same data to produce an English-language EN 15804+A2 draft and prepares it for third-party verification ahead of registration.

Q6Can it help with CBAM?

CBAM requires embedded emissions to be calculated per installation under its own rules, and actual emissions are verified by an accredited verifier. A Korean EPD or a product carbon footprint cannot substitute for this. Sales of CBAM certificates for 2026 imports start on February 1, 2027, and the first annual declaration is due by September 30, 2027. greenMRV helps organize the activity data and supporting evidence you need; it does not file declarations or perform verification itself.

Q7Do you use Korea’s national LCI database?

KEITI states that the Korean LCI DB and its impact assessment factors may not be used for commercial purposes. greenMRV complies with this condition and states the name and version of the database used for every result.

Q8How long does it take?

It depends on the number of products, how ready your data is, and the target standard and verification route. We will publish how long greenMRV takes to reach a preliminary calculation and draft once we have measured it in the pilot. Certification audit timelines follow KEITI’s procedures. For reference, the 2026 Changwon support program schedules site visits in June, calculations from July to October, and final reports in November.

Q9Does it help with Low-Carbon Product certification and public procurement?

Low-Carbon Products are Korean EPD-certified products whose carbon footprint is at or below the maximum allowable carbon emissions. That maximum is based on the average for comparable products over the past six years, counting back from the quarter before the application date; where no such value exists, a minimum carbon reduction rate applies. Low-Carbon Products are among the green products that Korean public institutions are required to purchase. greenMRV’s scenario feature lets you check in advance where your product stands against the threshold. This check is a preliminary assessment; KEITI decides on certification.
