Why now

Requests for part-level carbon data have already begun

Joining Catena-X is not a legal obligation, but it is becoming a procurement requirement for European OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.[5] Below, we list only publicly reported facts, each with its date and source.

Based on public sources

BMW ties Catena-X registration to procurement

Since April 2025, BMW has made Catena-X registration part of its procurement process. Supplier onboarding starts with the certificate management use case (sharing AEO/CTPAT, IATF 16949, and ISO 9001 certificates).

Primary sources [7][8]

Bosch asks for part-level PCFs with every quote

Since late January 2025, Bosch’s automotive business has asked for a PCF per part number with every new request for quotation. The PCF must be submitted together with the price to count in the sourcing evaluation, and Bosch asks for it to be updated every year. Its guidance recommends the Catena-X PCF Rulebook as the calculation basis, notes that submissions currently go through SupplyOn, and says certification is not yet mandatory.

What certification actually means

There is no “Catena-X certification” for suppliers

Do suppliers need Catena-X certification?

No. In Catena-X, it is the companies providing solutions and services that get certified. Suppliers onboard through an operating company and use certified solutions to exchange PCFs that comply with the rules. Where a higher level of trust is needed, they can opt for PCF program certification or third-party verification.

Three common misconceptions

Misconception 1

Association membership lets you exchange data

FactData exchange starts with onboarding through an operating company. Association membership is optional.[27]

Misconception 2

“Catena-X Ready Company” is a Catena-X certification

FactIt is a status awarded through the BMW Readiness Booster program. BMW calls it a “certification,” but it is not the same as provider certification under the CAF.[7]

Misconception 3

A PCF must be verified before you can send it

FactThe verification framework sets no mandatory trust level. The level you need depends on what your customer requires.[4]

PCF Rulebook v4: 7 rules suppliers need to know

The Catena-X PCF Rulebook v4.0 (September 2025) builds on ISO 14067 and ISO 14040/14044 and adds the rules the automotive supply chain needs. Its scope runs from raw materials to the factory gate.[1]

Based on Rulebook v4.0

Rulebook v4.0 full text (PDF) (opens in a new tab) ↗

End of 2027

Transition period

Provisions marked “after the transition period” apply on a voluntary basis until the end of 2027. The period was extended from the end of 2025 under v3.1, in particular to give SMEs time to adapt.

§2.4

3% / 97%

Cut-off

Flows may be excluded only if together they account for less than 3% of the total PCF, and the 97% coverage is documented through a screening analysis. When assessing the 97%, PCFs and emission factors received from suppliers count as 100% covered.

§4.3

Ratio 5

Allocation hierarchy

Avoid allocation where possible, in this order: sector guidance and PCRs → subdivision → system expansion. If allocation is still needed, calculate the economic value ratio of the main product to the by-product (using 3–5-year average prices): at 5 or below, allocate on a physical basis (mass, number of units, exergy, or energy); above 5, allocate on an economic basis.

§5.1.2

Power

Electricity accounting

Emissions from power generation infrastructure are included (new in v4). Renewable energy contracts count only if they meet the minimum requirements (conveying source attributes, unique claim, tracking and retirement, same year, same market), and PPAs count only when linked to energy attribute certificates (EACs). Contracts that fall short are assigned the fossil grid mix. Purchased electricity without an eligible contractual instrument is assigned the national residual mix or, where no residual mix exists, the fossil grid mix.

§5.2.6

PDS · DQR

Primary data share and quality rating

PDS is calculated and shared for every PCF dataset based on actual production (prospective PCFs excluded). A contribution counts as primary only when both its activity data and its emission factor are primary. The (technological, geographical, and temporal representativeness, rated 1–5) becomes mandatory after the transition period.

§7.2.4–7.2.5

10%

Recalculation

An annual review is mandatory. If screening-based emissions rise by 10% or more over the previous period, the PCF must be updated (v3.1 used 5%). Changes in processes, materials, or energy, changes in calculation method, and significant errors are also grounds for an update.

§7.2.2

Reported separately

Offsets excluded

Offsets such as carbon credits are excluded from the PCF. If you have purchased offsets, report them separately, disclosing their source and referencing the original certificates. “Carbon neutral” claims for parts that rely on offsets are outside the scope of the Rulebook.

Primary data share

What counts as “primary data”?

How high does the PDS need to be?

The primary data share (PDS) is the portion of a PCF that comes from primary data. There is no set minimum, but it must be calculated and shared for every PCF dataset based on actual production.[1]

Rulebook v4 §6.1 · §7.2.4 · §7.2.5

  1. Utility bills are a source of primary data too. Combustion emission factors for standard fuels count as primary. (§6.1)
  2. Even with meters installed, a contribution stays secondary if its emission factor comes from a database. (§6.1, §7.2.4)
  3. A supplier’s PCF counts as primary only to the extent of the PDS the supplier reports. (§7.2.4)
  4. PDS is not a quality score. The data quality rating (DQR) is assessed separately and becomes mandatory when the transition period closes at the end of 2027. (§7.2.5)

Actions that actually change your PDS

  • Obtain supplier PCFs that come with a reported PDS
  • Bring renewable electricity contracts up to the minimum requirements (linked to EACs)
  • Measure direct process emissions
  • Meter directly connected on-site generation (where the contractual instruments have not been sold)

Tier 1 supplier program

Tier 1 suppliers don’t have to collect sub-tier PCFs alone

The accuracy of the PCFs that OEMs receive depends on data from Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers. We group your suppliers and support them through registration preparation, calculation, and the first exchange, reporting their progress to you in a single view.

The process in 5 steps

  1. 1

    Select suppliers

We set priorities based on purchasing spend, contribution to the PCF, and data readiness.

    What you receive
List of target suppliers and rollout sequence
  2. 2

    Briefings and readiness checks

We hold briefings in Korean and check each supplier’s readiness against the same criteria.

    What you receive
    Readiness status for each supplier
  3. 3

    Wave-based preparation

We group suppliers into waves and support them through preparing for BPN issuance, connection, and the first calculation. Each supplier registers and signs agreements in its own name.

    What you receive
Schedule and status for each wave
  4. 4

    Common templates and calculation

Everyone works to the same criteria and templates, but each supplier’s data is handled separately.

    What you receive
    Comparable PCFs and PDS values
  5. 5

    Exchange and progress reporting

You receive supplier PCFs via Catena-X and follow progress on a dashboard.

    What you receive
Registration and first-exchange status, PDS distribution, list of non-responders

  2. Tier 1 supplier (you)Receives Tier 2 PCFs and builds them into your calculationSee the PDS aggregation formula →
  3. Tier 2 supplierReceives Tier 3 PCFs and builds them into its calculation
  4. Tier 3 supplierCalculates its PCF from its own data
PCF datasets pass only to direct business partners, one tier at a time from the bottom up (one-up-one-down). Each tier passes on its PDS with the dataset, and the recipient aggregates the values as a weighted average based on absolute contributions.

Data principles

  • Data is exchanged only between direct business partners (one-up-one-down): OEMs receive PCFs from Tier 1 suppliers, and Tier 1 suppliers receive them from Tier 2 suppliers. (Rulebook v4 §1.4)[1]
  • Suppliers’ cost data and original BOMs belong to the suppliers. We report only the exchanged PCF values and progress metrics to the Tier 1 supplier.
  • We obtain consent from, and sign a contract with, each supplier individually. The contract structure will be published once confirmed.

Data from plant systems passes through the collection device and becomes a PCF dataset in the calculation engine. Your EDC connector then sends it to the customer’s connector in line with the usage policy. Identity is verified through the BPN and credentials, and the PCF is registered in the Digital Twin Registry.

What IT teams ask first

IT 1What do we need to open on the firewall?

It depends on the deployment option. Once technical validation is complete, we will document the network requirements for each option in the technical overview. Until then, we review them together in a technical meeting with your IT team, based on your environment.

IT 2What data leaves our company?

Only the PCF data model fields permitted by the usage policy, and only to the partner you have a contract with. Raw data used in the calculation, such as BOMs and utility bills, is not exchanged.

IT 3How are secrets and keys managed?

If you self-host, you use HashiCorp Vault, as Tractus-X EDC requires. With an app or a managed connector, the provider’s policies apply.

IT 4How often do we need to upgrade?

Tractus-X ships a new version every quarter. Catena-X release transitions (Jupiter → Saturn → Neptune) need to be built into your operations plan in advance.

FAQ

Preparing for Catena-X: frequently asked questions

Every answer shows its sources and the date checked

Q1Do suppliers need Catena-X certification?

No. Under the Catena-X Conformity Assessment Framework (CAF), certification applies to solution and service providers. Companies that exchange data are currently outside its scope, and no separate certification is needed when you use a certified solution. If you need greater confidence in your PCF, you can opt for PCF program certification or third-party verification.

Sources [4][31] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q2Do we have to join the Catena-X Association to exchange data?

No. Data exchange starts with onboarding through an operating company (Cofinity-X for Korean companies). Association membership is optional and does not include data space access.

Source [27] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q3How much does it cost?

Based on published prices (checked October 11, 2026), the annual Cofinity-X license costs €1,500 for groups with revenue under €100 million and fewer than 20 exchange partners. If you use an app, its cost comes on top (for example, from €3,000 a year for exchange only, or from €10,000 a year for calculation and exchange), and data preparation and calculation cost extra. greenMRV package prices will be published once confirmed.

Sources [35][37] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q4How long does it take?

Registration with the operating company itself is quick. According to Cofinity-X, account creation takes about 1 hour, the review up to 3 days, and the price offer about 2 days; signing the agreement varies case by case. The overall timeline depends on data preparation and PCF calculation. We will publish our durations for each step once we have measured them in the pilot.

Source [8] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q5Can we submit a PCF calculated under ISO 14067 as is?

The starting point is the same, but an ISO 14067 PCF may not be enough as it stands. Rulebook v4 builds on ISO 14067 and adds requirements such as cut-off (total exclusions below 3%, with 97% coverage documented), the allocation hierarchy, electricity accounting, and PDS sharing. Check your existing calculation against these requirements and close any gaps.

Source [1] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q6Do we have to install the EDC connector ourselves?

Not necessarily. You can choose an app with a built-in connector, a managed connector run by a service provider, or a self-hosted deployment. Self-hosting requires a runtime environment that includes PostgreSQL and HashiCorp Vault.

Sources [29][34] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q7How high does our primary data share (PDS) need to be?

There is no set minimum. However, a PDS must be calculated and shared for every PCF dataset based on actual production. A contribution counts as primary only when both its activity data and its emission factor are primary, so even with meters installed, a contribution that relies on a database emission factor stays secondary. The data quality rating (DQR) becomes mandatory after the transition period (end of 2027).

Sources [1][4] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q8Is renewable energy (RECs, PPAs, etc.) reflected in the PCF?

Yes, if the contractual instrument meets the minimum requirements (it conveys generation source attributes, supports a unique claim, is tracked and retired, and comes from the same year and the same market). A PPA counts only when it is linked to energy attribute certificates (EACs). Contracts that fall short are assigned the fossil grid mix, and where certificates cover only part of your consumption, the residual mix applies to the rest. In Korea, RECs, the green premium tariff, and PPAs need to be assessed contract by contract.

Source [1] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q9Can carbon credits lower our PCF?

No. Offsets are excluded from the PCF. If you have purchased them, report them separately, disclosing their source and referencing the original certificates. The same applies to carbon removal credits. In the EU, Directive (EU) 2024/825 applies from September 27, 2026, prohibiting offset-based “neutral” product claims in consumer-facing labeling and advertising.

Sources [1][48] · Checked October 11, 2026

Q10Could our cost data or BOMs be exposed to customers?

Only the fields defined in the PCF data model are exchanged, and only with direct business partners (one-up-one-down), under usage policies and contracts. Raw data used in the calculation, such as BOMs and utility bills, is not exchanged.

Readiness assessment

How ready is your company for Catena-X data exchange?

In a readiness assessment, we review where you stand in 6 areas—customer requests, BPN, connector, calculation method, verification requirements, and data ownership—and separate what to do now from what can wait.

The readiness assessment is not a certification or verification; certification and verification are performed by the relevant bodies.
